Furthering his education, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and his Doctorate of Optometry in 1983 from Southern California College of Optometry. Glaucoma
Optic nerve, also called cranial nerve II, is a bundle of more than one million nerve fibers that carries visual messages from the retina to the brain. The optic nerve is associated with a number of diseases which typically causes permanent and potentially severe loss of vision. Examples of such diseases are glaucoma, optic neuropathy, viral infections, bacterial infections, and diabetes.
Macular Degeneration
Macula is the small sensitive area in the center of the retina situated near the optic nerve that is responsible for central vision. The macula allows you to perform detailed tasks that require central vision such as reading or sewing. Damage to the macula, commonly known as macular degeneration, eventually results in central vision loss making reading or intricate work difficult or impossible without the use of special low vision optical aids.
Cataracts
Lens is a clear structure of the eye located behind the iris that helps focus light or an image on the retina. The lens, by changing shape, functions to change the focal distance of the eye so that it can focus on objects at various distances, thus allowing a sharp image of the object to be formed on the retina. Vision-threatening complications of the lens could include cataracts. A cataract is a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye, varying in degree from slight to complete obstruction of the passage of light. Cataracts typically progress slowly and are a natural process to aging.
Eye Exam
The risk for cataract increases as you age. Personal behaviors such as smoking and alcohol use and those with diabetic tendencies also have an increased risk of developing this condition. So what can you do to further protect your vision as you age? First and foremost, stop smoking. Secondly, living a healthy lifestyle, using sunglasses to block ultraviolet sunlight, and scheduling a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once per year may also help to delay age-related cataract.

The basic purpose of wearing tanning bed goggles when using a tanning bed is to ensure that the eyes and eyelids have full protection from the harmful UVA and UVB rays emitted from tanning bed lamps. The naturally thin eyelids only protect the eyes against about 25% of the UV rays from a tanning bed; therefore, simply shutting the eyes will certainly not provide enough protection. Another common fallacy is the adequate protection received from draping a towel over the face while using the tanning bed. That most certainly is not true. The towel only filters the UV rays, it does not block them. Without use of goggles for indoor tanning, you risk burns to the cornea and can develop serious problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration. The most serious of all the problems associated with not wearing tanning goggles is the development of skin cancer around the eyes and on the fragile eyelids. Taking a few simple precautions will help safeguard your eyes if you should chose to tan indoors.
