Endoscopy
The primary diagnostic procedure is a colonoscopy, which requires outpatient bowel preparation and is scheduled in the endoscopy center. The doctor inserts a long, flexible tube with an attached camera into your anal canal. The camera sends real-time images of the inside of your colon to a monitor so that the doctor can identify polyps and other abnormalities.

After reviewing your medical history, Dr. Worsey and Dr. Beiermeister use diagnostic tests to confirm Crohn’s disease and rule out other conditions. They can order blood work to check for an infection. Imaging procedures like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography (CT) scans help to evaluate the health of your bowel.
Computed Tomography
They check your abdominal tenderness and often perform flexible sigmoidoscopy in the office to help confirm diverticular disease. Your doctors may offer computed tomography (CT) scans to confirm the presence of inflamed or infected pouches in your colon.
Chemotherapy
All cases of rectal cancer require surgery to remove the tumor, nearby lymph nodes, and the tissues immediately surrounding the tumor. You might also need radiation and/or chemotherapy before surgery to shrink the tumor and after surgery to kill any residual cancer cells.

General Surgery
Dr. Worsey has board certifications in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery as well as being a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (England), the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He has been Chief of both General Surgery and Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla and in 2014-2015 was Chief of Staff. He also currently holds a part-time position as Physician Chief Operating Executive at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Minimally invasive surgery is a procedure done using small incisions. Dr. Beiermeister or Dr. Worsey may insert a narrow tube into the incision that’s about one-half inch wide. Then they use specialized surgical instruments that fit through the tube to complete your surgery.
Robotic Surgery
Dr. Worsey and Dr. Beiermeister introduced Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols to Scripps Memorial Hospital in 2018 and we have found these measures dramatically speed up recovery and discharge. Also both surgeons have helped plan and direct Surgical Site Infection prevention measures throughout the Scripps system. As well as performing traditional open and minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Beiermeister also performs robotic colon and rectal surgery and indeed serves on the Scripps Joint Operating Committee for robotic surgery. Dr. Worsey has served as the co-chair of the Scripps Surgery Care Line since 2016.
