R. Carter W. Jones III, MD, PhD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist who specializes in pain management. As a pain management specialist, he evaluates, diagnoses and treats all forms of pain, with a particular interest in patients with chronic visceral pain and cancer-related pain.Dr. Jones uses a variety of treatment modalities to reduce suffering and restore function, including conservative and complementary approaches, medications and interventional techniques. He specializes in intrathecal pain pumps" for drug delivery to treat severe, chronic pain.His research focuses on understanding causes of many types of chronic pain and identifying ways to predict an individuals response to pain treatments. He is also involved in developing new treatments for those with chronic pain.Prior to joining UC San Diego Health, he was a fellow in pain medicine at UC San Diego Health. He completed his residency training in anesthesia at UC San Francisco and an internship in internal medicine at the University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center and earned his medical degree and doctorate in pharmacology at University of Iowas Carver College of Medicine.
