Orthodontic surgery (orthognathic surgery) is used in cases where the bite is extremely bad, or where there is significant jaw bone abnormalities. Early prevention orthodontic treatment received as a child and teen can prevent the necessity of surgery later in life to correct orthodontic issues that could have been more easily fixed when the jaw was still growing. Therefore, whenever possible, it is highly recommended that orthodontic treatment be taken care of during the preventitive phase of life as a child and teen.
