James Maisel, M.D. , founder of the Retina Group of New York, is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist, Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Society of Retinal Specialists. He completed his Dyson fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at New York Presbyterian-Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Maisel Co-Chaired the World Diabetic Congress, was named the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Humanitarian of the Year and has received many awards including the Banko Gift of Sight Award, a Special Congressional Recognition Award and an award from Nassau County for leadership, dedication and service to the community. He has served as a Corporate Advisory Board member for the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Medical Advisory Board. He was also a member of the AAO Instrument and Device and Low Vision Committees and has received research grants from the U.S. Public Health Service and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Maisel also represented the National Society to Prevent Blindness at the ANSI Z-80 committee where he helped establish many ophthalmic industry standards. He has served as an editor of EyeCare Technology Magazine, co-editor of Diabetes Technology Magazine, authored numerous professional journal articles, and lectures nationally on retina, medical informatics and practice management topics. In addition, he has been a clinical investigator, consultant, educator or advisory board member for Pfizer, Novartis, Genentech, Alimera, Regeneron and Allergan. Dr. Maisel specializes in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal tears, retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, uveitis, cataract surgery complications, eye injuries, floaters, flashing lights, and offers second opinions.
