The best defense is to have regular screenings. The American Cancer Society recommends that you begin colorectal screenings at age 50 (45 if you are African-American). You may need to begin screenings earlier if your mother, father, brother or sister has had the disease or you suffer from inflammatory bowel disease. Although there are several colorectal cancer screening methods, only colonoscopy lets us examine the inside of the entire colon.
