The three surgical methods most used to treat rhegmatogenous retnial detachment are: the placement of an encircling band around the eye (scleral buckling); surgical removal of the vitreous humor (vitrectomy) in which the natural gel-like fluid filling the center cavity of the eye is removed and then replaced to maintain correct pressure; and, the injection of a gas bubble into the vitreous cavity (pneumatic retinopexy) along with cryotherapy (the therapeutic use of cold temperature treatment) of the retinal break.

Cataract Surgery
Most cases of this type of retinal detachment are associated with the natural aging process. The separation that occurs can occasionally be accelerated by cataract surgery, YAG laser capsulotomy following cataract surgery, diabetes, trauma, hemorrhage within the eye and uveitis (inflammation within the eye). Certain conditions including a number of inherited syndromes, a peripheral retinal degeneration (lattice degeneration), or extreme nearsightedness (myopia) may predispose individuals to retinal detachment.
Eye Exam
During your eye exam, we will take a full medical history, a full ocular (eye) history, a review of systems, and obtain a list of the medications you are taking. We will also determine your current eyeglass prescription and perform exams to check: vision with and without glasses; eye movements; the pupils; the retina (back of the eye); eye pressure; and both a visual acuity and a visual field test (please read more about these tests directly below). When necessary, we will also test for color vision. Pediatric exams for our child patients include all of the above along with testing for depth perception and for amblyopia, also known as "lazy eye", and strabismus, in which the eyes appear to cross. Dr. Ronald Klug joined Ophthalmic Physicians of Monmouth in July 1986 after having completed his training. He attended Queens College of CUNY, earning a B.A. in Biology in 1976, and New York University School of Medicine where he earned his M.D. in 1980. Thereafter, he spent two years as a resident in Internal Medicine at Long Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center and three years as a resident in Ophthalmology at New York University Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in Medical Diseases of the Retina at Bellevue Hospital prior to joining the practice. He was board certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1987.

Diabetic Retinopathy
This type of retinal detachment takes place when fibrous membrane in the vitreous humor and retina causes traction on the retina, pulling the retina from the layer beneath (the retinal pigment epithelium or RPE). This type of detachment is most common in proliferative diabetic retinopathy, the advanced stages of diabetic retinopathy.

Ultrasound
Pachymetry — The doctor will use drops to numb the eye. Then the thickness of the cornea is measured with an instrument utilizing ultrasound waves.
MRI
Hemifacial spasm — Hemifacial spasm is a condition in which powerful, painful contractures occur to one half of the face. Neuroimaging, such as CT or MRI, may be recommended since hemifacial spasm may be due to an intracranial tumor or vascular compression of the facial nerve.

Our facility includes a free-standing surgical center for cataract, glaucoma and minor surgery as well as ocular plastic surgery for eyelid abnormalities and droopy eyelids, along with various forms of laser surgery.
Blepharoplasty
Oculoplastic procedures often provide both functional and aesthetic results. An example is blepharoplasty through which we remove excessive, droopy eyelid skin to rejuvenate the appearance, often with the added benefit of increased peripheral vision.
Cosmetic Surgery
Facial wrinkles — BOTOX is very helpful in the treatment of wrinkles in the forehead and adjacent to the eyes. Using an extremely fine needle, the doctor places minute doses of BOTOX in the needed areas. This treatment provides an excellent alternative to more invasive cosmetic surgery procedures. Effects last approximately 3 to 6 months.

Skin Cancer
Skin cancer treatment is managed in two ways: Excision (surgical removal) of the lesion or irradiation. Cancer must be completely removed or destroyed to eliminate its continued growth or recurrence. Our doctors will generally perform surgical excision but if the tumor is too large in size or if the patient is not a good candidate for surgery, irradiation will be necessary.

First used over 30 years ago, lasers have become the standard of care for the treatment of many disorders. The laser produces a pure, high-intensity beam of light energy. This light can be focused to selectively treat the desired area and leave the surrounding tissues untouched. The energy that is absorbed creates a microscopic burn to join tissues together, destroy lesions, and open blocked passageways.
