Dental Examination
Our number one priority is to ensure the safety of your child during the lip tie or tongue tie revision. Smaller babies and infants are gently wrapped in a swaddle to limit their movements and protect them during the oral examination and evaluation and for the surgical procedure. A small amount of local anesthetic will be injected into the tied tissues. Our staff will, with two hands, gently stabilize the child’s head. The laser is then used to remove the excessive attachment, which takes between 2 and 5 minutes, depending on age, behavior, and size of the lip tie or tongue tie. A final assessment is done and then the child is immediately returned to his/her parent. We encourage nursing your child immediately after the procedure.

Dental Examination

X-rays
Because we care about your child’s bodily health and well-being, we believe that reducing the amount of radiation exposure is extremely important. Although the amount of radiation used in dental X-rays is very small, the effect is cumulative, so all radiation counts. Digital X-rays can reduce your child’s exposure to radiation by up to 80 percent!

Teeth Cleaning
Your child’s exam will take about 45 minutes. Each regular exam includes a detailed teeth cleaning, during which we clean, polish, and rinse the teeth to remove any tartar or plaque that may have built up on the tooth surface.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is effective in preventing plaque from building up and hardening on the tooth’s surface, which can in turn cause cavities or tooth decay. A fluoride treatment in our office takes just a few minutes. After the treatment, your child may be asked not to rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes in order to allow the teeth to absorb the fluoride. Depending on your child’s oral health or the doctor’s recommendation, a fluoride treatment may be required every three, six or 12 months.
Dental Sealants
Ask your dentist about dental sealants, a protective plastic coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts.
Space Maintainers
If an abscess occurs in one of your child’s primary or baby teeth, it will most likely need to be extracted. Depending on the location of the extraction, a space maintainer may be necessary until the permanent tooth emerges to prevent the surrounding teeth from drifting into the open space.

Resin Composite
Children’s teeth bonding is dental filling used to restore and reshape teeth. The process improves both mouth function and aesthetic appearance. The bonding material is either a composite resin or ceramic that hardens under a specialized light and fuses with the treated tooth.
Veneers
Traditional dental restoratives, or fillings, may include gold, porcelain, or composite. Newer dental fillings include ceramic and plastic compounds that mimic the appearance of natural teeth. These compounds, often called composite resins, are typically used on the front teeth where a natural appearance is important. There are two different kinds of fillings: direct and indirect. Direct fillings are fillings placed directly into a prepared cavity in a single visit. Indirect fillings include inlays or veneers fabricated with ceramics or composites and generally require two or more visits.
Crowns
Crowns are a restorative procedure used to improve the shape or strength of a tooth. A crown is a “cap” cemented onto an existing tooth that usually covers the portion of the tooth above the gum line. In effect, the crown becomes the tooth’s new outer surface. Crowns can be made of porcelain, metal or both. Porcelain crowns are preferred because they mimic the translucency of natural teeth and are very strong.

Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a comfortable, non-invasive procedure. To complete the restoration or cosmetic improvement, your Doctor will roughen the surface a bit and coat the tooth lightly with conditioning liquid. The tooth-colored resin will be applied next, to shaded to match your child’s natural teeth closely. The material will be shaped to perfection then hardened.

Root Canal Treatment
Sedation can range from the use of laughing gas to calm a patient to general anesthetics used to put patients to sleep. Patients with dental phobia, low pain tolerance, major dental treatment, physical handicaps or strong gag reflexes may require sedation. Procedures like fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments often require sedation.

Dentures
Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Frenectomy is a simple, short oral surgery procedure conducted in our office with a laser. It eliminates the presence of a frenum, a connective tissue in the mouth. There are 2 types of frenum in the mouth. A labial frenum is the tissue that connects the inside of the upper lip to the center of the gums between the two upper front teeth. A lingual frenum is the connective tissue between the underside of the tongue, connecting the bottom of the mouth to the area behind the teeth. A frenectomy eliminates the frenum. We provide this surgery at the Sun Valley Surgery Center.
Tooth Extractions
If your child’s permanent tooth has an abscess, the treatment options consist of root canal therapy to clean and remove the infection, or tooth extraction. Your pediatric dentist may also choose to add an antibiotic to your child’s treatment plan. This will prevent the infection from spreading further into the jaw and bone tissue.
