Dental Examination

Root Canal Treatment

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Gingivectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat gingival hyperplasia. During this procedure, our periodontists will numb the affected areas and remove the excess gum tissue over covering the teeth. The gumline will be reshaped to reveal a more desirable smile. The postoperative care is simple, and patients typically only need over-the-counter pain medication for a couple of days. It is important to maintain good brushing and flossing habits to prevent the reoccurrence of this condition!
Deep Cleaning
Periodontal disease is commonly referred to as gum disease. Gum disease occurs when bacteria, plaque and tartar build up above and below the gumline. The harmful bacteria in the buildup results in inflammation, which can cause the breakdown of the soft tissue and supporting bone around teeth, creating “deep pockets.” One of the most effective ways to treat periodontal disease is scaling and root planing, or more commonly known as a deep cleaning.

Dentures
A frenulum is a small piece of tissue that connects a part of your mouth to another part. The two most common types that patients have problems with are the lingual frenulum, which connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth, and the labial frenulum, which connects the top lip to the gums. If these tissues are too short or thick, they can make chewing, eating and speaking difficult, as well as contributing to gum recession, a gap between the front teeth or problems for denture wearers. A frenectomy gently removes the frenulum to alleviate these problems and allow you to enjoy these activities without discomfort.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Terri has been a team member of Greensboro Perio since 2021 although she is no stranger to perio. Collectively, she has worked in oral surgery and periodontal dentistry for over 30 years. She is a mother to two adult children, whom she loves very much. When she is not working, she enjoys summers by the pool and trips to the beach. She also loves spending time with friends and family, dancing and enjoying live music.
Jaw Surgery
Some gummy smiles are caused by a skeletal issue that traditionally could only be adequately treated with orthognathic surgery. However, because orthognathic surgery is an invasive procedure associated with a longer postoperative recovery and discomfort, many patients choose not to proceed with this therapy. Alternatively, our periodontists may recommend lip repositioning as a less invasive option for these patients. The procedure can also be used to address a “hyperactive” upper lip instead of the use of BOTOX®. Lip repositioning is used to restrict the upper lip from moving excessively. After sufficient anesthesia is achieved, our periodontists will carefully remove some tissue on the inner top portion of the upper lip. The upper lip is then stitched to a lower position that is more aesthetically pleasing. The results of this procedure are visible immediately, and patients leave the office smiling more confidently!
Osseous Surgery
If deep cleanings and other periodontal treatments have not successfully reduced the pocket depths around teeth, our periodontists may recommend osseous surgery. This procedure is designed to smooth and reshape bone that has been damaged by periodontal disease and create shallower pockets to make it easier to maintain healthy gums.

Bone Grafting
Her research involvement gave her the honor of receiving her Doctor of Dental Surgery with distinction in research. Dr. Longville’s strong interest in periodontology led her to pursue a residency in periodontics. She completed her three-year specialty training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, earning a certificate in periodontology and a Master of Science in dental science. During her residency, she conducted research comparing ridge preservation outcomes when bone grafting with bovine and porcine xenografts. Her findings have been published in the “Journal of Periodontology.”

Orthodontics
Impacted teeth can negatively affect the function and appearance of a smile. Thus, our periodontists may recommend to treat an impacted tooth with exposure and bonding. This is a procedure frequently used in combination with orthodontics to bring the impacted tooth into the dental arch. Exposure and bonding involve lifting the gum tissue above the impacted tooth, uncovering the tooth and bonding an orthodontic attachment to it. This attachment is connected to a small chain, usually made of gold. An orthodontist will apply gentle traction and pressure to the chain to help the tooth erupt and move into the correct position in the mouth.

Teeth Whitening
Some soft tissue lasers may also be used to treat sleep apnea, perform nerve regeneration, aid in dental implant recovery, remove benign tumors and perform teeth whitening treatments.
