We have been taking our beloved family dog to GAH for 12 years. He has had cancer and surgery many times. GAH always works with me to be sure to do the necessary tests but to avoid unnecessary testing that will just run up the bill. I can't say enough good things about the practice or Dr. Lynne Haeussler and Dr. Dan Berbert! The are considerate compassionate vets who always provide top care.

We've had good experiences here using their kennel service. The people are friendly. They give a cute little report when you pick up the animal after boarding. Toys and left over food always returned. I don't know the cat "has a good time" but she's not traumatized or anything when she returns home so I feel she is treated well while in their care.

The ONLY place to take your 4 ...

The ONLY place to take your 4 legged children to.I have been using Gaithersburg Animal Hospital for 22 years, and have sent at least that many people there during this time.Everyone has been very pleased with every doctor practicing there.I trust and have faith in what they do for my 3 dogs.My relationship with the Berbert Doctors is fantastic! They always fit me in for anything that may come up last minute with my pets. I have even had to get in touch with them in the middle of the night and they were always there for me.

I no longer trust this animal ...

I no longer trust this animal hospital. Before selecting any vet, please check for violations posted online by the Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Gaithersburg Animal Hospital (GAH) has a recent violation/penalty on record. Although I had many good years taking my two cats and dog there, the quality of care suffered in recent years. Then they made a FATAL mistake with one of my cats and attempted to deny responsibility. My final experience with them also revealed their non-compassionate, business-oriented mode of operation.

On that fateful morning, my cat required urgent care, but for whatever reason GAH provided no treatment (forgot about her?). I had taken her to GAH at opening time because she suffered from acute diarrhea with dehydration. A GAH “nurse” carried my lethargic cat to the back room as I urgently repeated my instructions that she needed fluids badly and was to be seen ASAP by the first available doctor. The fourth time I repeated my instructions, the receptionist said, “I know!” I then confirmed with the receptionist that my cat was not to wait for her “usual” vet to arrive later that afternoon. I reluctantly left for work (GAH generally does not allow clients in the back room), assuming the first available doctor would administer fluids to my cat within the hour and that she would be monitored for as long as necessary.

I did not receive an update until that afternoon, at which time her usual vet called me to recommend euthanasia. I was in disbelief because my cat had been well the day before, and I could not understand why she would fail to respond to the replacement fluids. Then I learned nobody had even administered fluids! Why? I have been unable to find out. The nurse must have left my cat in a cage where she was forgotten for several hours because she received absolutely no treatment (They billed me for “kennel care.”). This was a textbook acute diarrhea case that required IV fluids and electrolytes.

That afternoon by the time I insisted via phone that they administer fluids (They ended up giving her subcutaneous instead of intravenous fluids), it was too late for her to recover fully. When I rushed back to GAH, my cat was lying motionless and unresponsive in an incubator, unable to maintain her temperature. In shock, I brought her home.

To add insult to injury, none of three vets on duty the following morning would agree to make a 3-mile trip to my home to euthanize my rapidly declining cat, despite what had transpired at GAH the day before. In the aftermath I could not get a consistent or complete account of what happened the day my cat was in their care. Weeks before when my cat had experienced her first bout with diarrhea, I had taken her to an emergency hospital where she received timely IV fluids and recovered. I wrongly assumed GAH would provide the same timely treatment for my cat during her second bout with diarrhea, regardless of my urgent instructions to the staff.

While there was evidence my senior cat’s GI system was beginning to fail, there was no excuse for my once trusted vets to let her suffer untreated in “kennel care” for several hours. My cat ultimately died of dehydration due lack of timely IV fluids and electrolytes.

I believe GAH deteriorated as they added doctors and multiple staff (see their Webpage photos with 14 receptionists and 15 nursing staff), which led to errors with staff communication, billing, and ultimately medical care. GAH doctors had made some questionable healthcare decisions for my animals in recent years, and I should have abandoned them long before the final tragedy. After this final bad experience, I took my other cat to another vet who provided proactive, top-notch care. I have no complaints about my new vet except that the facility is in need of renovation.

Gaithersburg Animal Hospital i...

Gaithersburg Animal Hospital is the best veterinarian’s office my family and I have ever been to.

We have been going to them for about 12 years and have always been happy with the care we have gotten for all our pets which have included multiple dogs, cats & rabbits.

Dr. Sepcariu is our favorite Vet, but all the doctors are great! The staff is professional and caring.

I always highly recommend their office to everybody I know.

If you love and care for your pet, this is the place to take them to.

GAH is the best. By far. The...

GAH is the best. By far.

They took care of my dogs for 20 years.

It was only 20 because I recently moved out of state.

Not a single Vet working there could have exhibited more professionalism,

or genuine care. ROUTINELY.

The techs were always polite and helpful.

I've been there for almost any treatment that you can imagine, as I always had

my own pups, and was heavily involved in Lab Rescue for quite some time.

Anyone who would give them a Single star rating is not going to be happy

no matter where they go. I CONSTANTLY referred people to GAH.

I've been through it all with them, and never gave a second thought to

any service. Their aftercare for surgery was fantastic.

I honestly can't say enough about them.

I actually know, and I've had experience with many Vets throughout the

years, being involved with Lab Rescue. They ALWAYS ended up at

GAH for any follow treatment of any kind.

On those occasions where I came in for the "final" treatment, there was love

and compassion and it was obvious that the attending doctor actually

cared about both me AND my pet.

You can't go wrong with these wonderful people.

Happy with the Care

I have been taking my dog to GAH since she was a pup. We have had her for 4 years now and she has been receiving excellent care from the staff at GAH. They came highly recommended from a multi-dog owner who had told me how compassionate GAH was when her aging dog had come to her final days. My dog has had a couple of emergencies and the vets were quick to take care of her. One emergency was a huge laceration in her groin. Another time was mysterious vomiting and diarrhea problem. Two different problems and both situations were handled so well. They took so good care of her. I read the 1 star review and need to say that I have never had any issue with anyone at GAH. I have always been received warmly and professionally. They are a caring group of people at GAH and I highly recommend them.

Great Vet Hospital

I have been going to Gaithersburg Animal Hospital for over 3.5 years now and i love it. I've never had an issue with any of the docs nor the staff.

I used to have an Olde English Bulldog and every time I came in they would fight over who would assist the doctor =-)) I thought it was cute.

But i highly reccomend them.

Great vet

I've been a client here for the last 10 years, and have several dogs and cats. The care is always great and the prices are comperable if not better than most other vet hospitals. One major thing that I LOVE about this place is that they work with several rescue groups and the Montgomery County Animal Shelter providing vet care at a reduced rate. I think it shows they really have an ethical side as far as animal care goes, they aren't just out to make a profit, like most businesses these days. I highly recommend - love all the doctors and the staff is kind and considerate.

Avoid This Vet!

The number of stars they've gotten is overrated! We've been bringing our new puppy there for the past 8 months. They've been nothing but trouble when we'd finally had enough and switched despite our best efforts to work with them. The receptionists are mostly young, inexperienced, sloppy, flaky, and/or disorganized, and then rude and defensive when we rightfully call them out on it. We've had to watch them like hawks when it came to our bills and receiving all the items we'd paid for. Some are nice and well-meaning, but others are downright insulting.

They are constantly switching our appointments with different doctors on the last minute despite specific appointments/requests. They don't ask a lot of questions and therefore, know nothing about our dog because they are typically impatient and ready to move on to the next patient.

But mostly, they're untrustworthy! We found out later they gave him vaccines and tests he didn't really need and missed ones he did need! All because they didn't know him and take the time. Our puppy was diagnosed with Lyme disease to our astonishment. At our new, decent vet, we've discovered GAH didn't perform the proper tests needed BEFORE treatment to monitor his condition (it's too late now), but expected us to hand over the loot to pay for it anyway when the test would have been useless. They did not inform us of the proper medicines and dosage of preventatives to keep this from happening in the first place, either! They also never once after the diagnosis checked his vitals, lymphnodes or for any symptoms. Horrible. When I called to ask questions, they were insulting, condescending, and were uninformed about ticks and the disease. They told me to 'read the brochures'. What am I paying so much to them for again? They also didn't perform tests in front of us except for the first visit and never showed us the tests they did perform to show us the positive/negative result. They don't ever call just to check up on him the day after. During his neuter surgery, they left him dirty with urine near his incision overnight and expected us to take him out to relieve him. All they did was say sorry he was dirty.

The only nice thing I'll say is that they will generally call you back shortly if you call with questions. However, they give conflicting messages and opinions to us which is very confusing and frustrating. Above all, they are also overpriced compared to our new vet that cares! Avoid this vet!

claimed iconBusiness Response06/20/2009

This review is so markedly in contrast with the feedback I receive from clients on a daily basis (GAH is consistently rated highest in quality by Checkbook magazine based on hundreds of client reviews)that I can't help but wonder if the names of several nearby hospitals are being confused. The majority of our receptionists are 10-15 year veterans, not young and inexperienced. This continuity of a caring staff over time is one of the things clients constantly comment on, both verbally and in our client satisfaction survey. Another oft repeated kudo is the frequent followup phone calls from the vets regarding patient progress reports. Many of the comments regarding Lyme disease diagnosis and therapy suggest a basic level of misunderstanding regarding this condition which may account for some of the disatisfaction. We would welcome the opportunity to meet with this individual and review their medical records in person to identify the source of their frustrations and clarify the above misunderstandings.
