Resin Composite
Once the dentist has selected the proper shade of resin composite, the bonding material, the dentist will etch the teeth that are going to be bonded to make the surface of the teeth rough. Next, a conditioning liquid will be applied to the teeth. Both of these procedures will aid in the bonding process. The resin composite, a putty-like material, is then applied to the teeth. The bonding material is molded and shaped as desired, and then an ultraviolet light is used to harden the bonding. Once the bonding is completely hardened, the dentist will make adjustments to the shape as needed and polish it. The entire process takes an average of 1 to 1 hour per tooth.
Veneers
If your smile is less than perfect due to discolored, chipped, or uneven teeth, or if you have gaps between your teeth, porcelain veneers can give you a bright, beautiful smile. Porcelain veneers are one of the most common restorative dental procedures we offer at Modern Dental in East Windsor, NJ. Veneers are thin shells made of porcelain that are bonded to teeth to change the size, color, and even the shape of imperfect teeth. Porcelain veneers can be placed on one or several teeth according to your needs.
Crowns
Before having a crown made and placed on your tooth, the dentist will need to take x-rays and examine your tooth to see what might need to be done to prepare the tooth for the procedure. In the case of a severely decayed tooth or one that has had a large piece broken off, the dentist may need to add filler material to the tooth so that it will support the porcelain crown. If no filler is needed, the dentist will file some of the tooth enamel and dentin on the top and sides of the tooth to allow room for the crown. The crown is a cap, which is tooth-shaped, that will completely cover your existing tooth.
Bridges
Bridges are non-removable or fixed treatments to replace teeth that are missing. There is more than one type of bridge available for a patient, allowing them to be tailored to the patient’s specific needs. Modern Dental can discuss with you the variety of options available and help you make the best selection for the work you need done. We offer dental bridges that are made up entirely of porcelain for many of our patients.
Dental Bonding
You will need to brush and floss your bonded teeth twice daily, as recommended for your natural teeth as well. Because bonding is not as durable as porcelain and metal, you should take some general precautions with your bonded teeth. These include not chewing on ice or your fingernails, and not biting down on hard foods such as nuts or hard candies. With proper care and maintenance, cosmetic bonding will last many years.
Restorative Dentistry
Porcelain crowns are used in restorative dentistry to restore the appearance and function of teeth. Teeth may need crowns due to decay, chips, or breakage. Crowns may also be used to cover discolored teeth or to correct the shape of an irregular tooth. Crowns can also be used with dental implants to replace missing teeth. Porcelain crowns are preferable to metal or other materials, especially for front teeth, because they are hard, durable, and more closely resemble a natural tooth. Root Canal Treatment
Root canals are spaces inside of a tooth that run the length of the root, and the pulp is contained within this space. The pulp of a tooth can become infected in several ways. If a tooth becomes decayed to the point that the pulp is exposed, then bacteria and food particles can get into the pulp, causing an infection. An injury that causes a tooth to break or chip can also expose the pulp to bacteria, leading to infection.
Apicoectomy
Endodontics refers to treatment of the pulp or root of a tooth. Common endodontic procedures we perform at Modern Dental include root canal treatments and surgery on root ends, which is called an apicoectomy. Both root canal treatments and surgeries are performed on a tooth when an infection occurs in the tooth’s pulp, or nerve.

Deep Cleaning
If you have gingivitis, the dentist will perform a deep cleaning procedure on your teeth known as scaling and root planning. Scaling involves removing large pieces of tartar through use of an air-powered or ultra-sonic tool, and then scraping off the smaller remaining pieces until the plaque is removed above and below the gum line. The mouth is rinsed periodically to remove debris and bacteria. Teeth may then go through root planing to remove any rough spots that provide good places for bacteria to accumulate and to give the gums a good surface for reattachment.

Dentures
Teeth that are damaged or lost from diagnoses like periodontal disease or osteoporosis can be replaced with full or partial dentures. Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Steven Reff uses his extensive experience to provide the highest level of cosmetic and surgical care in a gentle, compassionate manner. He received his D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. While there, he graduated at the top of his class and was honored by his faculty by being inducted into the Gamma Pi Delta Prosthetic Honors Society. He also served as President on a variety of committees including the Dental School’s Global Outreach Program and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery study group. Following dental school, Dr. Reff completed his general, cosmetic and surgical-based training at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine/New York Presbyterian Hospital. Upon completing his training Dr. Reff began treating patients in private practice. He was also invited to take a position at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine teaching postgraduate candidates and future dentists, and was additionally appointed admitting privileges. When he is not practicing dentistry or attending professional obligations, he enjoys hiking with his Yellow Lab, fly fishing, and relaxing with his wife Allison and their children
