Medical Weight Loss

Primary Care
Two years ago I had severe pain in my calf and stiffness in my lower back. My primary care doctor sent me to a neurologist for an MRI and several other visits. After telling me my lower disc was herniated the only option offered was surgery. By this time three months had passed and the pain was negligible so I decided not to proceed. The pain disappeared completely until about 4 months ago. I kept hoping that the pain would disappear but it was only after coming to Dutch Physical Therapy that I started to get relief. I had heard him talking at a seminar and was so impressed by his presentation that I decided to give him a chance. After just a few visits the pain had all but disappeared and I am now able to control it/alleviate it with the exercises he recommended.

Neurological rehabilitation is designed for people with diseases, trauma, or disorders of the nervous system. Our program at Dutch PT is focused on tailoring a treatment designed to improve the well-being of individuals who suffer or have suffered from neurological conditions such as stroke, trauma, infections, degeneration, structural defects, tumors, and blood flow disruption. The McKenzie Method is a reliable assessment process intended for all musculoskeletal problems, including pain in the back, neck and extremities (i.e., shoulder, knee, ankle etc.), as well as issues associated with sciatica, sacroiliac joint pain, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, muscle spasms and intermittent numbness in hands or feet. If you are suffering from any of these issues, then an assessment may be right for you! Developed by world-renowned expert physiotherapist Robin McKenzie in the 1950s, this well-researched, exercise based approach of assessment, diagnosis and treatment uses a comprehensive and clinically reasoned evaluation of patients without the use of expensive diagnostic imaging (e.g. x-rays and MRIs). The treatment principles of the McKenzie Method promote the body’s potential to repair itself and do not involve the use of medication, heat, cold, ultrasound, needles, or surgery. McKenzie allows patients to learn the principles and empowers them to be in control of their own symptom management, which can reduce dependency on medical intervention.
MRI
I first came to Dutch PT in July with lower back pain & he patiently listened to my full explanation of how all my pain started. He did a great job of thoroughly explaining each exercise to me and asking helpful questions so that he could better understand the root of my pain. After having an MRI, we discovered that I had a severely herniated disc & I had surgery to trim the disc on August 6th. After taking about two months to heal, I returned to physical therapy with him. Again, he patiently listened to my update and has walked me through the entire recovery process. I now am pain free & feel so much stronger thanks to him! I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for a fantastic PT.

Of course! Physical Therapy can help reduce swelling, increase active and passive range of motion and increase strength and endurance after orthopedic surgery. Most importantly, attending physical therapy increases the functioning of the involved muscles, bones and other soft tissues much more quickly and effectively than just “staying at home” after surgery.

Physical Therapy
After my accident, I was left with several major issues including torn, herniated and bulging disc and torn rotator cuff. Given the extent of my injuries, I was not sure physical therapy would be an option to help me get better. Upon arriving at Dutch PT I was greeted with assurance and an optimistic therapist that was willing to work with me. Throughout this process I have gone from barely being able to walk and properly care for myself to functioning normally and getting back to some of my usual routine. I am thankful to everyone at Dutch PT for all that they have done, they have always been proactive at checking up on me for my appointments.

The AlterG has been proven safer and more effective than aqua jogging and aquatic therapy because you are able maintain normal mechanics and your feet touch the ground, thus allowing you to maintain a normal gait without the added resistance of water.

Owner of Dutch Physical Therapy, Mirjam Maassen, began her story in the Netherlands where she was born, raised, and educated. Hence the name, “Dutch” Physical Therapy. Mirjam specifically chose to move to Louisiana because of the Cajun culture, food, wide range of availability in sports and warm weather. Dutch Physical Therapy opened the first office in 1994 and since then we have grown to three locations, which are located in Baton Rouge and Denham Springs. Our philosophy at Dutch PT is to empower and educate our patients through manual therapy, reducing or eliminating pain, improving strength, mobility, and postural education.
