General Info
The Nu Wray Inn Bed & Breakfast is a historical and cultural landmark. Listed on the National Historic Registry, the Nu Wray is a real mountain gem. Strangers don't stay that way long, if a guest doesn't rub elbows with the rest at breakfast, they can hardly escape the comradeship of the rocking chairs which beckon from the front porch in summer or gatherings by a roaring fire in winter. The Nu Wray is one of the old style country inns, a vanishing luxury almost lost in the wake of motel chains and fast food huts. Located just 40-minutes from Asheville, the Nu Wray offers travelers a soft bed, lace curtains, piles of home cooked food(Breakfast) and alittle slice of the past at a modest price. It's been this way for three generations after first being established in 1833 incorporating a log cabin which stood on the spot. Garrett D. Ray started a family tradition when he bought the inn and enlarged it in 1870. After his death in 1917, his daughter, Julia and her husband William B. Wray took over the inn and renamed it the Nu-Wray. Their son and daughter (Rush Wray & Annie Wray) ran the inn for some 40-years and kept the inn's charm alive including Garrett Ray's hand planed boards which still line the interior walls and steam heat still clangs and clacks with a comforting sound on a cool night or morning (Thanks to being located in the mountains at some 3,000 Feet.) Past guests have included Thomas Wolfe, Mark Twain and Elvis Pressley. A hearty breakfast is served Family Style at 9am with a fine stick-to-the-ribs meal.
