Oral Cancer Screening
Oral pathology is the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that affect the teeth, gums, and various other structures in and around your mouth. In addition to tooth decay and gum disease, the mouth can suffer from diseases such as oral cancer or the herpes simplex virus. Many oral diseases can be life-threatening unless they are properly identified and treated as early as possible, which is why oral pathology is such a vital preventive measure.

Teeth Cleaning

Crowns
An impacted tooth is simply one that does not fully erupt from the gumline. Teeth can be fully impacted (the crown never makes an appearance outside of the gums) or partially impacted (a portion of the tooth erupts). Most commonly, this issue affects the third molars at the back of the mouth, which are also known as the wisdom teeth. However, it can affect other teeth as well, including the canines. Your canine teeth, also called cuspid teeth or eye teeth, are the pointy teeth near the front of your mouth. The top canines are more likely to be impacted than the bottom ones.
Bridges
You only need one dental implant to replace a single missing tooth. A crown can be attached to the post once it has been customized to match the shape and color of your other teeth. You’ll protect your natural enamel by getting a single implant post instead of a dental bridge.

Root Canal Treatment
While every full mouth restoration is different depending on the needs of the patient, they all start the same way: with a consultation. Once our oral surgeons have had a discussion with you about your goals for your smile, they’ll inspect your teeth, jaws, and oral cavity. From there, we can determine if you need any preparatory treatments such a gum disease or a root canal, and we’ll provide you with a list of which restorative services we recommend for your unique case. We’ll work with you to perfect your treatment plan so that it’s to your liking, and then we’ll begin restoring your smile.

This process, called resorption, leads to bone loss and a sunken-in appearance in the face. It also leads to your jaw changing shape over time, which, in turn, requires you to continually reline or replace your dentures as they no longer fit.

Jaw Surgery
As for his studies, Dr. Aslam-Pervez attended the Trinity College of Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons. From there, he pursued specialty training at the University of Maryland and R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Recently, he added “Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic” to his list of accomplishments as well! As a result, he is involved in dental and maxillofacial implants for complex dental & facial rehabilitation, corrective orthognathic surgery, reconstruction of the head and neck for benign and malignant pathology, and more.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Patterson attended Hampton University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. Four years later, he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry with his dental degree. In 1978, he joined the US army Dental Corps and specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery and earned his certificate in this field in 1982 at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Tooth Extractions
Bone Grafting
Allogenic bone grafting uses bone material harvested from a cadaver that is freeze-dried to extract any remaining water. Unlike autografts, allogeneic bone grafts don’t contain any live bone cells. Instead, the team uses the allogenic bone as a foundation over which healthy bone tissue can grow. Allogenic bone grafting requires only one surgery.

Orthodontics
An impacted tooth is one that has failed to properly erupt through the gums. The upper canines become impacted in about 2% of the population. This can cause tooth loss and bone resorption in the jaw, so it’s best to have the issue treated as soon as possible. This might involve removing the impacted canine, transplanting it into the correct position, or simply exposing it so that it can be moved into the correct position with orthodontics.
Braces
The most common and conservative method for addressing impacted canines is orthodontia. Braces can move the other teeth, creating space for the canines to erupt into their proper places. This often works if the impaction is diagnosed early enough in a patient’s life. In some cases, an oral surgeon must remove extra teeth or baby teeth that have not yet fallen out in order to make room for the canines.

General Dentistry
Dr. Shihabi’s journey to Northern Virginia Oral, Maxillofacial, and Implant Surgery began at the University of Pennsylvania, which is where he earned his DMD. After that, he obtained his medical degree from Louisiana State University, completed an internship in general dentistry, pursued postgraduate training in maxillofacial oncology and microvascular reconstruction, and trained in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
