In May 2016 I went to the St. Vincents East ER for self-injury. The wait in the ER to get put in a room was very short, but after that almost everything was terrible. After I got put in an ER room & got some gauze wrapped around my arm to stop the bleeding, the wait was 6+ hours. I completely understand the fact that you have to wait a long time in the ER. It was just a long time to sit there & be overwhelmingly anxious. The psychiatrist they sent in to evaluate me was condescending & I didn't feel that he was listening or caring or trying to be empathetic at all. The doctor who did my stitches was impatient & I could tell that he thought it was going to be much less 'severe' than it was, since at first he was unrolling the gauze very quickly & uncarefully, until he saw the blood. While he did the stitches, he was going too fast & not being careful enough (When I went to my regular doctor to get the stitches taken out, she also said that it looked like he hadn't done the best job). Not only were the stitches sloppy, he failed to care enough to clean all the dried blood off of my arm or to wrap it in gauze to keep the stitches from snagging on everything. Afterwards, I had no choice but to be led up to the mental/behavioral health floor. The facility was updated, which I did appreciate. For some reason, though, the doctor they assigned to me went out of town a day after I got there. Why did they assign him to me when he was about to go out of town? After he left I had a different doctor who absolutely wouldn't listen to me or allow me to leave, though I was 19, had a ride, & a place to go home to. My mom had to drive 8 hrs to sign me out AMA; otherwise I couldn't leave. The food was bad & it took 5 days of me asking for them to finally give me a Powerade. None of the nurses care about you at all - I only saw 2 good nurses during my week there. They badly need to improve on caring for people better, being empathetic & kind, & acting like they care about their job.

I'm so ready to change my doctor's here I think think I'm going to go back to Grandview it's really bad there how in the world can you be coming by ambulance and they tell the ambulance driver don't bring her here take her somewhere else could you wait two and a half hours on your stretcher before we even put her in a room my ambulance driver looked at me and said we're taking you to Grandview you'll get better service there

Omg. Went to the ER at 8:30 in the am 4/21. My neighbor had gout. The pain was extreme. Waited in the room for 3 hours. I'm not kidding. 3 damn hours while the patient Ms Goins was crying, screaming at nurses and writhing in pain. It wasn't until I told a nurse that I was going to blast them on Facebook that we got some attention. The charge nurse was in, then came the doctor or PA. They finally gave her some meds to dull it. When is it normal procedure to let a patient experience that much pain for multiple hours? We understand delay for emergencies but there were no emergencies during our visit. This used to be a great ER. Now it's horrible, compounded by the fact that the room was filthy some type of dried liquid on the floor, partial gloves, and what looked to be toilet paper. I flagged down a cleaning person who was lovely and she washed the floor and that was the only good experience.

6 hour wait time. Incompetent nurses, the Dr didn't even come in to see us in 6 hours. This hospital should be shut down. You would have had better care at Cooper Green. Whoever is running this establishment should be fired. We've never had such terrible care in an ER than the lack of care at SVE. The nurse didn't know anything, we wouldn't have trusted her in any capacity.

This has not been a good experience for my husband or for me some of the nurses are on point. My hat goes off to these people they have to be ready for anything but unfortunately there are some nurses that make you wonder how or why they choose to work in health care. We are at st.Vincents East in TRussville, when we went through the er I had no complaints we came by ambulance we were there for several hours before they moved us to the 6th floor. My husband was severely dehydrated vomiting and all around very sick he is a type 1 diabetic as well they didn't hook him on any fluids till almost 7:45 after being in his room around 3:00 then denied him water after giving it to him downstairs in the er. So after that we went to bed didn't really see much of anyone else for the rest of the night CAndie was awesome at catching up what the previous. It's did not including keeping my husband with something to drink since the previous nurse didn't have time to make him any but did bring me a pitcher to put some water in it for him. Okay I thought new years and they are busy ok then this morning the nurses come in and tell him not to drink anything g or eat anything for a test they were going to do 8 hours later when I asked how much longer by this time he was extremely thirsty from throwing up and being dehydrated they say we don't have any test ordered and that he should be drinking fluids. Wtf then he decided he wanted to find somewhere else and he got very upset and the NUrseMAnager was great at resolving the problem and nurse Kelly which had just came on shift made sure they stayed in communications with me and the doctors which the other nurses should have kept us informed. But not only do they fell to stay informed they also never explained either of us what was causing everything. We never found out why he was sick until nurse Kelly and the NUrseMAnager did some investigation and they informed me I was not happy especially when you are told that he was already suffering from possible internal bleeding

This hospital needs to be shut down for the unprofessional and horrible actions that have been place there.

There is a nurse named Natasha who is horrible.

The attendant Chris needs to learn how not to threaten people.

I was dehydrated, abdominal cramping, bloated, nause, vomiting, and diarrhea. Got to the er at 1 and at 4 still in lobby with only 3 others. I was told that I was next 5 times. I left and Donna the blond at the desk was one of the ones that told me I was to be the next one called. I will not be going back to this er ever!!!!

This is the absolute worst hospital you could go to.I fell in Target it took the EMA over 30 minute to get to me.The EMA got me there but i still had to go to triage to sit and wait.I had to tell the nurse, who obviously seen me struggling to walk that I needed a wheelchair. They take me back to a secondary waiting room.I wait for almost 2 hours for me to get a room. The doctor comes in and says I think you will be ok without doing a x-ray.Finally 30 minutes pass...i go to the x-Ray room...now I am sitting in a closed off room waiting on Doctor..If I told you I was in pain, Give me a tylenol or something to ease it!!!!The nurses are horrible...I will be writing another review!

Overall
Awful experience.

I cannot speak for the entire hospital, but I can speak for what my family has experienced with our stay on the 5th floor. My father was admitting to this floor with the infection mrsa as well as c.diff. He has an open wound that bleeds and drains a lot and in the 4 day time span that he's been there his linens have only been changed once and not by staff but my mother. His requests for pain medicine are unanswered. His requests for water is also unanswered. My mother asked for water for him and was told to "get it yourself" and the nurse behind the desk gave her the code to their nutrition room. In my opinion, that is a HUGE break in policy. Due to his wound draining he had blood on his floor from walking to and from the bathroom and also had his trash completely full because apparently housekeeping doesn't exist there unless you request it. And don't expect them to have a good attitude when you do request for the floor to be cleaned because it was beyond awful. Also, since he does have an infection a fever comes with it. Usually with a fever people get cold right? Well when he requested another blanket they told him he couldn't have one. The nurses have no idea what is going and can't answer questions or do any type of compassionate caregiving. I understand being a busy nurse, I understand that it is not a hotel service, but when the rooms are empty and all the nurses and techs are sitting behind the nurses station playing candy crush I have a hard time with that. I would reccomend that anyone who gets placed on the 5th floor of this hospital to be moved immediately, because you will not get any type of care.

I was sorry to read about the other peoples experience with the hospital. I, myself have been admitted a few times and was always treated nice. Never had any problems with nurses or anyone else. I will not go anywhere else. As far as the E.R. goes, never had any problems except once you r put in a room sometimes the waiting seems like forever. As far as billing goes, they will work you ( I know this from a friend } I guess it depends on the problems at the time and the person. There drs. are super and I would trust my life with them.

I do not know what "star ratin...

I do not know what "star rating" to give here. This is regarding a ER visit for my daughter after a car accident in April. The wait was not overly long so I am okay with that. The physician was very pleasant, thorough and took good care of my daughter. My problem is with the billing system. I was frazzled and not thinking about anything but getting my daughter taken care of and trying to do the right thing. I gave our medical insurance information and insisted on paying what I knew was ER copay. I wasn't thinking about medical coverage through my auto insurance until the agent asked about medical bills. I immediately called and gave the information to the ER/hospital. THEN, I received a bill (the first one) from Premier Medical Collections. I called and was told that this was not actually a collection agency, but the billing company for the hospital. I gave them the information that my insurance agent told me to provide them with. They were very rude. They didn't want to take the information. They refused to send the bill to auto insuance and started spouting privacy rules and told me they would fax a form to me and I could fax it back. Trying to get them to understand I didn't have access to a fax machine was a nightmare . In my experience as a medical biller, the information they were refusing to send didn't need a release to send it to the insurance company so the bill could be paid. From there, it was a complete nightmare. It took months to get it straightened out. The people at Premier were rude, incompetent and had no real knowledge of how to do their job. They refused to send a detailed bill to the insurance company. I spent so much time on phone calls back and forth to them, I should have gotten paid for my work. My agent finally told me just to send her the bills I had received and she would go ahead and release a check after she personally spoke to them on more than one occasion. She decided they were ridiculous and incompetent as well. When I called to follow up , I was told they had not received a check. The back and forth started again! My agent sent a copy of front and back of cashed check to me and Premier. The whole time I was receiving nasty-grams from Premier. I will never use St. Vincent's East again solely due to their billing policies.

Since it is now October and I am just now writing this review should tell you that I am still trying to get one of the bills straightened out and get my refund for the 125.00 copay I paid in April.

Will never go there again. They tried to care for my son who got burned and he ended up getting infection at the site, was running a high fever the next day. So we took him to another hospital were he had to endure pain and surgery. The doctor told us reason he got infection was because of how they wrapped the wound. Never go there they do not know what they are doing!!

Just awful

My grandmother has been in and out of St. Vincents East Hospital for the past couple of weeks. She has been having heart problems, and has visited their ER a few times. She is due for surgery in the morning, and we (the family) were visiting for a few hours. There was about 7 of us in the room. No one in that entire floor had anything to say about the amount of people. And of course, we got the RUDEST nurse that I think the whole state of Alabama could find. She told us that she was tired of pushing and stumbling through us, and that there was way too many people in the room. Well, we let it slide, because it was understandable. Whatever. But be nice about it. about an hour later, she came and in and said "Okay, everyone OUT!" and pointed at the door. "Shoo, get out, get out, get out!" I thought we paid her to do her job? Not be rude, and obnoxious. This is obviously a critical time for us, and the last thing we want to do is deal with someone as rude as her. This is not the first time that we have ran into this problem. On another hospital visit, for the same reason, 2 weeks ago, there was another rude nurse. My grandmother is hard of hearing, and this nurse said to another nurse "How are we supposed to treat a patient that is deaf in one ear, and can't hear anything in the other?" Which again, understandable. But she is here to help, not make our visit ridiculously stressful, more than it already was. I think that St, Vincent's East would be a better hospital, if it had better nurses. Especially ones that have more of a personality, rather than that of a rock.

Complete Disaster!

I went to St. Vincent's in Birmingham, AL. The main reason I was there was because of severe headaches but was also there to get fluids due to dehydration.Long story short, they completely ignored my complaints about having a severe headaches and I actually stayed in the hospital for 3 days so they had plenty of time to investigate but didn't. Then I go home thinking everything is okay and the headaches would just eventually go away. 3 days later I stroke-out and my left leg becomes paralyzed. I then go back to the hospital and before they can figure out what is going on my left arm becomes paralyzed. Eventually they figure out that my brain is bleeding and they then attempt to treat me without surgery but it was too late and I needed brain surgery to survive. In my opinion I got looked at as a person just looking for painkillers and I'm having to pay the price for it and may have to pay for it the rest of my life. What also bothers me is that they had an "oh well" attitude about my situation and accused me of abusing drugs. They told me later that they tested me for cocaine, which came out negative. The doctors that failed to diagnose me properly were Dr. Vaporean and Dr. Shallcross. Dr. Swillie is the one that kept implying I was abusing some kind of illegal drug. In my opinion you should not go to this Hospital if anyone has ever told you that you look like a drug dealer or drug abuser. I have dark hair, dark skin and had to ask for painkillers for my severe headaches so that's probably why they ignored my complaints about my severe headaches.

Great care, terrible TV

The nurse are great and so is all the staff. My only complaint would be the television staions are bad. NO ESPN!! While you are sick and in hosp all you have to do while get better is watch TV. This place has no ESPN so you miss all the good games. Makes no sense as you know it comes with the sat package.
