Teeth Cleaning
Teeth cleaning: Your hygienist will perform a professional cleaning of your teeth. Special dental instruments are used to remove any plaque or tartar on your teeth, and your teeth are polished to make them appear brighter and smoother. Home care instructions are discussed so you can keep your teeth healthy and beautiful!
Fluoride Treatment
Your child should visit the dentist every 6 months for regular dental cleanings and checkups. We recommend fluoride treatments twice a year along with cleanings to keep teeth strong.
Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings which are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent decay. Most tooth decay in children and adolescents occurs on the chewing surfaces of these back teeth or molars. This is because most molars have irregular surfaces with pits and grooves which tend to trap food and bacterial debris. Sealants flow into and coat these pits and grooves so that bacteria cannot multiply and cause decay.

Fillings
SMART is the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, which is a set of safety measures to reduce mercury exposures during dental amalgam filling removal. These safety measures were developed as a result of scientific research collected by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT).
Resin Composite
A tooth colored filling is a composite resin that is used as an alternative to amalgam. This is an excellent cosmetic option for those patients who do not want the look of silver in their mouths. These restorations are bonded to the tooth and have a great success rate.

Crowns
When a tooth has a cavity the dentist removes the decay and fills the hole with a composite filling, which is ideally no more than 50% of the tooth. The tooth is what supports the filling. When you get a cavity that takes up 60% or more of the tooth, a crown is indicated. A crown covers the entire tooth and holds the tooth together.
Bridges
Brushing and flossing are always important, but extremely important when crowns and bridges are placed. Impeccable oral hygiene will enable your restoration to last for many many years. Ask about our proxy brushes!
Restorative Dentistry
Crown Lengthening procedures are done for both restorative dentistry and/or to improve the esthetics of your gum line. This procedure adjusts the gum and bone level to expose more of the tooth so it can be properly restored and easily cleaned.

Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal, or endodontics, is the process of removing the nerve and blood supply from the roots of a tooth. A root canal is often necessary to save an infected tooth. If an infected tooth is left alone for a long period of time, an abscess can form. An abscess will show up on an x-ray as a dark spot below the apex of the root. This is actually bone loss in the jaw. It is very important to catch this problem before it progresses too far.

Periodontal Surgery
An abscess is an acute infection that can produce a facial swelling and can be in the form of either a tooth abscess or a gum abscess. A tooth abscess is caused by a necrotic (dead) tooth and a gum abscess is produced when bacteria gets lodged between the gum and the tooth. The treatment for each is directed at the signs and symptoms. Antibiotics help to treat the facial swelling aspect, but the source of the infection must be addressed. For the tooth abscess, the culprit is the necrotic tooth. The treatment is either a root canal (if the tooth can be salvaged) or an extraction and implant if the tooth is hopeless. For the gum abscess, a deep cleaning and, on occasion, periodontal surgery may be needed to remedy the situation.
Deep Cleaning
Tenderness is normal after a scaling or root planing procedure (deep cleaning). To reduce tenderness and promote healing, it is best to rinse your mouth 2-3 times per day with warm salt water. One teaspoon salt / 8 oz. water.

Dentures
Dentures are replacements for missing teeth that can be taken out and put back into your mouth. While dentures take some getting used to, and will never feel exactly the same as one’s natural teeth, today’s dentures are beautiful and more comfortable than ever!

Dr. Trent Buchanan received his Comprehensive Implant Residency Program 4 (CIRP4) certificate in 2013 for continuing education in dental implants. He remains at the forefront of implant dentistry and is the preferred implant dentist in Birmingham and Hoover for many happy patients.

Oral Surgery
Dr. Buchanan graduated with honors from Auburn University in 2002 and earned his doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 2006. Looking to further his education, he completed a general practice residency at Denver Health Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, with a focus on medically compromised patients, oral surgery, and advanced treatment planning. Dr. Buchanan practiced for 2 years in Denver before moving back to Birmingham.

Orthodontics
The Cone Beam CT is a three-dimensional image that has become increasingly important in treatment planning and diagnosis in implant dentistry, along with endodontics (root canals) and orthodontics. During a CBCT scan, the scanner rotates around the patient’s head, obtaining up to nearly 600 distinct images. It is great for placing implants because bone width and height can be viewed in three-dimensions. Implants can be placed virtually in the software with the exact angle and length, and this information can be translated to surgical guides that allow for minimally invasive implant surgery.
Invisalign Orthodontics
® Preferred Provider with Silver Status for the number of cases he has successfully treated. Dr. Buchanan is highly experienced in Invisalign® and has helped hundreds of Birmingham and Hoover residents straighten their teeth and perfect their smiles.
Braces
Invisalign® is a new system of straightening teeth without the use of conventional braces. A series of clear plastic aligners are utilized to create tooth movement. Moving teeth with removable aligners is not new. However, the computer program, which can generate a series of aligners with small changes is the new part. Invisalign is recommended for orthodontic situations with mild to moderate spacing or crowding. They are virtually undetectable, easy to use, and comfortable to wear.

Teeth Whitening
If you have had some success with over-the-counter whitening products, this may be the option for you. It’s actually a step up from the over-the-counter systems due primarily to the delivery method. It takes a few days to make the trays and 7-10 days of whitening to get the pearly whites shining!
