Dental Examination
Early diagnosis is important for successful treatment of periodontal diseases. Therefore, it is important that children receive a periodontal examination as part of their routine dental visits. Be aware that if your child has an advanced form of periodontal disease, this may be an early sign of systemic disease. A general medical evaluation should be considered for children who exhibit severe periodontitis, especially if it appears resistant to therapy.
X-rays

Teeth Cleaning
Children’s hands and mouths are different than adults. They need to use toothbrushes designed for children. Both adults and children should use brushes with soft, rounded bristles for gentle cleaning. Change to a new brush about every three months.
Fluoride Treatment
This offer is valid for your child’s first dental visit if it occurs before their third birthday. This offer will include a consultation, examination and fluoride treatment. Dental Sealants
Tooth sealant refers to a plastic that a dentist bonds into the grooves of the chewing surface of a tooth as a means of helping prevent the formation of tooth decay.

Crowns
Find the tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown (the top part), not the root portion (the portion normally unseen). You may rinse the tooth but DO NOT clean or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is sound, try to reinsert it in the socket. Have the patient hold the tooth in place by biting on a piece of sterile gauze. Call our office immediately and alert the office. Your child will need to be seen as soon as possible.

General Dentistry
Dr. Shau received his bachelor’s degree in biology from UCLA, graduating magna cum laude and with Dean’s Honors List distinctions. After college, he remained at the UCLA School of Dentistry to pursue his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He graduated from dental school with numerous honors, including the UCLA Section of Pediatric Dentistry Award for excellence in the specialty. He then completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at NYU Lutheran Medical Center, followed by a residency in pediatric dentistry at St. Barnabas Hospital of Bronx, New York. At St. Barnabas, Dr. Shau also served as chief resident in pediatric dentistry. Before joining Austin Children’s Dentistry, Dr. Shau practiced in Houston, Texas, while serving as clinical assistant professor at the UT Houston School of Dentistry.
