Acupuncture originates from China and has been around for thousands of years.
Very fine needles are inserted in various areas of the body to help rebalance the flow of qi, increase the circulation of blood and balance yin and yang. Qi is our vital energy that keeps our organs functioning properly and our hormones regulated. Blood is what nourishes our skin, organs, muscles and tendons. When qi or blood is not flowing properly, we have pain or disease; we consider the qi and blood to be stuck or stagnated. Acupuncture needles are strategically placed, depending on the individual’s condition. These points open the pathways where qi and blood flow, to unblock stagnation, increase circulation, thus rebalancing the body so it can heal.

Dr. Jacque Nelson, DOM
Jacqui Nelson is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine in the state of New Mexico and Nationally licensed as a Diplomat of Oriental Medicine. She received her undergraduate degree in Communications and Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay. Dr. Nelson then moved to New Mexico, completing her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College in Albuquerque in 2008. After maintaining a small private practice following graduation, she joined Dr. Theroux in practice at Desert Health in January of 2012. Jacqui also holds a M.A. in Elementary Education and teaches science curriculum locally at a post-secondary school for massage therapy. In 2006 Dr. Nelson received became a Certified Neuromuscular therapist through The Neuromuscular Therapy Center of New Mexico, enabling to combine greater aspects of manual bodywork therapies into the practice of Oriental Medicine. Additionally, Jacqui has pursued training in Acutonics®, wherein tuning forks are used to stimulate the energy of the body similar to the way needles are used.
Dr. Abbey Theroux, DOM
Abbey Theroux is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine in the state of New Mexico and Nationally licensed Diplomat of Oriental Medicine. She was raised in Taos, New Mexico and completed her undergraduate degree in Business from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. She returned to New Mexico to earn her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College. Shortly after graduating she opened a clinic in Albuquerque NM. In 2007 Dr. Theroux, received her certificate as a Hypnobabies Childbirth Education Instructor, for more information on Hypnobabies. This enabled her to combine her passion and knowledge of traditional Chinese Medicine with fertility, pregnancy and childbirth. Abbey is also a doula, assisting women physically and emotionally during their birthing times.

Ashley Ingram, LMT
Ashley Ingram is a licensed massage therapist in the State of New Mexico. She graduated from Universal Therapeutic Massage Institute in 2010. After working for a five star spa she attended UTMI Medical Massage program and became a certified medical therapist. This allowed her to combine her love of spa work with clinical massage to help her patients with injuries and chronic issues. Ashley offers a custom therapeutic massage experience for each patient, using Swedish, Medical and Myofascial techniques as well as couples, mother to be massages and doTerra Aromatouch technique. "I always serve the best interest of my clients at all times and provide the highest quality service possible. My goal is to heal my client/patients, ease their pain and stress through massage therapy. I am a believer of alternative health, wellness and focusing my energy in continued pursuit of knowledge. I am also blessed and grateful to a job I love. One final note of importance, I am a nurturing person by nature and therefore I am enthusiastic therapist for the elderly and disabled."

Other Modalities

E-stim
E-stim, also known as eltro-stimulation or electro-acupuncture, combines the theories of traditional needling methods with modern technology. After needles are inserted, wire clips are attached to them and electrical current passed through to stimulate the movement of Qi (vital energy). Acting upon the central nervous system and influencing the hypo-pituitary axis, E-stim is also thought to increase or alter the release of neuro-chemicals and hormones, providing an intensified analgesic effect, relieving pain and promoting healing.
Auricular acupuncture
Auricular acupuncture is the treatment of a variety of diseases and disorders through the use of prescribed points on the ears. Use of auricular acupuncture is recorded in the Huang Ji Neijing dating back to 500 – 300 B.C.E. Points can be stimulated through the use of needles, ear seeds or tacks, massage, and/or e-stim. Auricular therapies are noted to treat a broad variety of disorders with quick and effective results and little to no side-effects. Treatment of addictive disorders is a common focus of auricular acupuncture (NADA) but the full application of this modality is extensive.
Cupping
Cupping is a simple, though highly effective technique when used alone or in combination with other therapeutic modalities to enhance a treatment. Cupping has been used widely throughout world cultures over the course of human history. Within Traditional Oriental Medicine, cupping warms and invigorates the channels, moves Qi and moves blood in the channels. While there are different methods used by therapists when cupping in our modern world, it is essentially a suction therapy where heat is introduced into a glass cup, reducing the pressure within and creating a vacuum. As the cup is inverted and applied to the skin surface, the skin is drawn up into the cup, both creating and dispersing stagnation. Cupping is most frequently used for relieving pain and releasing tension in deep muscle tissues but is indicated for a wide variety of issues including but not limited to: headaches, dizziness, chest congestion, cough, asthma and other respiratory complaints; digestive complaints such as vomiting, diarrhea or indigestion; acute and chronic pain situations.

two prenatal visits, one acupuncture season if necessary (acupuncture inductions, calm spirit or any physical discomforts a women may be experiencing), on-call 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your estimated due date, continuous emotional and physical support throughout your birthing time, postpartum support 1-2 hours after childbirth to help you and your partner get situated and one postpartum visit 3-10 days after birth.
