Where to Go in Birmingham

Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is a single venue with double impact: It tells the story of the forge's heyday, melting tons of ore that would be wrought into tools and armaments for the Confederate Army, and how it was reduced to a pile of rubble by a calvary from Iowa during the Civil War.

Tannehill also doubles as a 1,500-acre outdoor oasis, with tranquil settings that betray its stormy past. The park is a favorite for nature-lovers and outdoor enthusiasts who hike, bike, horseback ride and more.

Craving art and culture? The Birmingham Museum delivers, with its special exhibits and some 21,000 works in its collection. Or, for a scientific twist, pay a visit to the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences.
